Self-Sourced Box Turtle - Trident Beacon Update

PFarm

Recommended Posts

All parts are ordered for the Turtle Box build, parts are printed. AFC controller is ordered but B/O till mid-month. I need to find the leftover rubber bands I had for the Filamentalist build. ordered a new Mellow Fly 2040 SB V3 the one in the Trident dip switch #1 is defective and Klipper no longer communicates with the tools head. I also ordered a Beacon probe and CNC bracket. I got extra extrusion to build the enclosure and some leftover acrylic panels from the Casa Enclosure build. Just waiting a game now till it all arrives 💤

Yellow and Purple colour scheme from stock filament I had.

2020 Extrusion arrived today:

Watching as well. Have ordered most of the parts now except for the AFC which seems to be un-obtainium at the moment (in the UK at least).

Maybe LDO has "first choice" for their kits. See the "clones" have already arrived on Aliexpress (AFC-Lite Controller board)

Some parts have arrived and I started assembling what I can. The extruders are complete! I will cut the extrusions next to assemble the frame. I'm still waiting on microswitches, LED cables, 2 x 10 screws and DC motors. The AFC board came in today as well. @mvdveer I appreciate your build diary I have used it as a reference a few times.

Looking good. Have finished the LDO kit build. Now just waiting for the stl's to be released for the enclosure. (Have self sourced all the parts and ready to go). Will do a build diary of that.

I have done this one with the dissecant trays in anticipation of the enclosure.

Shout out if you need clarification of anything. When you get to the respoolers, be sure to mount the little DC motors in their slots in the printed parts. I made this mistake with this build in initially mounting them to far forward.

Ran out of purple and yellow filament so the side skirt got printed in black, after all, it a multi-colour tool right? DC motor will be arriving shortly.

@mvdveer I looked at some of the builds in Discord and looks like they're using LED strips for the corner LED.

Yes they are, though on the LDO build, I used the "cutable" strips. So I still have a chain of 20. Was not going to buy the pub versions. Will see how it turns out.

Wiring these corner LEDs are a pain in the proverbial.

Build looking good so far

Thanks, I have the same LEDs on hand. Any idea what the max milliamps allowed for LEDs?

No idea but this will give a chain of 20, so not many in there. I have seen builds with a chain of up to 50 LED's so I don't think it should cause a problem with the AFC-Lite board.

I just noticed an error in the BOM it calls for 4 x DF2-L but two are needed for the Turtleneck I had one extra on hand but I am still one short.

A bit of progress extruder mounted and got the spooler LEDs soldered and mounted. Still waiting on DC motors to assemble spoolers.

I started installing the corner LEDs today. First, since only the data input and output need to be in series, I drill a hole at the top of the LED's mounting plate to run a wire from the data out back into the underside of the Box Turtle.

I'm using Wagos for ease of wiring them.

@mvdveer I've read through your Box Turtle post again and I couldn't find how you routed the Turtle Neck wiring to the AFC. If they expect you to route the Can wiring and the Turtle neck wiring loosely through this hole where they can be easily pulled out of their connection on the AFC then this is a design fail IMO.

I'm going to use this strain relief for the Can cable so no room for any other wires. I'll be looking at a bulkhead for the Turtle Neck wiring.

Update: Never mind I found your photo that shows how you routed these wires. Is the little knockout at the bottom of the hole supposed to be the route for these wires?

@mvdveer I've installed AFC add on are these the files I need to make it work with Box Turtle? I assume that the Box Turtle must be connected to the printer for the software to boot up?

I drilled a hole in the rear skirt close to the turtleneck. The wiring is supposed to route through the punch out at the bottom of the fan, but that left wires to be tided outside of the unit. Still not ideal. Will reprint the rear skirt when I have time.

Yep they are. There are a few parameters to change in the config files.

I completed the wiring and PTFE tubing and bulkheads installation for the Turtle Neck I was out of four-pin bulkheads, so I used 2 two x pins. @mvdveer did you modify the bottom covers so the mounting legs and cover fit together?

Not yet - only realised after I posted the files and finished the build that they do not fit with the legs assembled. I originally fitted these without the legs. Will have to modify it when I have a chance.
