Cartographer Probe

The Fly SB2040 comes with 3m of cable which plugs in the circuit board power and ground, low and high CAN. You can put both the USB cable and CAN cable inside a flex loom for your umbilical. The other end of the CAN cable connects to the UTOC board in the electronics bay.

Would this be a good choice for the toolhead CAN PCB?

Fly-SB2040-V2

and pair it with

Fly UTOC-3

Also, what do you use for cabling? Are you buying a premade cable or fabricating one yourself?

I assume that my umbilical will end up with 2 cables, the CAN and the Beacon USB.

That is the exact combination I am using though the UTOC -3 is an overkill. A UTOC - 1 will do. However with the slight difference in price the UTOC 3 is a sensible option. The Mellow products comes with a supplied cable - a very good one at that.  (Power and Can)

Ye you will have the USB from Beacon and the Can cable running from the toolhead.

Thanks @PFarm

I'm shopping now. I'm going to get an Orbiter 2 extruder and use the SHT36 V2 board. Which version should I get? do I need an encoder? or a PT100 chip on board? Those are the options on Aliexpress' Mellow listing.

CAN Boards

I also need a USB interface like the Fly UTOC-1, Correct?

Not if you are using the Octopus board as the Canbus bridge. Nor if you are using the Fly UTOC-3

So which way to you recommend for a 1st timer.

1. Connect directly to the Octopus

or

2. Connect with UTOC-1 thru USB to the Pi

a PT100 chip on board?

If you want to use you're existing thermistor you won't need the PT100 feature. PT100 thermistors are supposed to be more accurate from my understanding.

Perfect!

I also did some research and learned that the PT100 chip (thanks @PFarm) is for more accurate temps and the 2204 chip is for better data transmission.

I assume having these will be either better or not essential but not a show stopper. Buying the board with both is literally only a few dollars more so... if there's no issue I'll get the full featured boards. Also, there are no 2204's with supplied cable in stock but I can buy a Mellow CANBUS cable separately. I will stick with the UTOC-1 tho.

Won't not Can't. 😆😝 i have enough other projects and not-printer issues to deal with that I do not need to break my Trident right now.

Honestly, I felt that I just wasn't torturing myself enough so now I'm going CAN. 🤣

Timer too close

Esoterical explains here that the TTC is a very annoying error. But it can be mainly attributed to the inferior character of the CB1 from BTT.

Solutions include the ones named, but Esoterical mentions repetitively that he has had much success with the solutions he suggests here. And that the part he describes under 'experimental' actually helped most of the times to solve this specific kind of problem.

In the beta group people with a CB1 fail to achieve accurate results and get better results when they get a CM4 instead of the CB1.

I also would like to mention that Beacon's warranty is VOID, if you use it with a Manta board.

@mvdveer I think I remember you mentioning that there's a CNC beacon probe mount for the stealthburner. If you know of one, could you point me in the right direction?

If anyone knows of one, please chime in. 🙂

This is the one that works well and well manufactured.

I'm currently using TAP - based on your experience - do you guys think it make sense to keep TAP and add Cartographer probe ?

using TAP for homing and Quad Gantry leveling and Cartographer for bed leveling ? is it even possible ? is that even make sense ?

I would appreciate your advice  ....

Interesting idea, I will be following this topic. I'm also running (cnc)TAP but am looking at this for my v2.4

There is a mod that does exactly this on Printables and I am (slowly) working on designing a similar setup for the Mini Stealth DAB.

Why not use Beacon with touch instead?

@atrushing how do you get around the endstop-pin both used by Cartographer and Tap, rename one?

  • Example: endstop_pin: probe:z_virtual_endstop
