Milo V1.5 CNC Bench Mill - Water Cooled

Going through parts I had previously purchased to build a CNC Mill I found a 36V power supply which I'll use to run the stepper motors, I've ordered the Mellow Fly TMC 5160 Pro. I ordered the last available set of X/Y plates from the Fabreeko site.

Re: those ribbon cables.

1. My cat Lulu loves these, she's perforated 2! Fortunately continuity was not affected.

2. The small ribbon is only needed if you want to do sensor less homing.

I like those. They would have been really nice to have during the VzBot build but, what I have works so, no need to change. But if I do... definitely going the ribbon cable route. (No cats at home some I'm safe                      ...for now).

The LDO X/Y and Z plates have arrived from Fabreeko. An advantage of living in a Canada/USA border town is having a service like Kinek that allows you to have a USA shipping address. The cost to ship the plates to the USA address was $14.00 compared to $40 to Canada, it is only a 15-minute drive to Massena NY. Two of the three Mellow Fly 5160 Pro have also arrived the third one was shipped separately and should arrive soon. 

FMJ plates are scheduled to arrive next Friday, June 14th. Once these come in I can start the assembly of the mill.

I assembled the X/Y plate today as mentioned in @mvdveer build diary Link here and the assembly manual Link here pay attention to the X/Y plate orientation, read and re-read the instructions. 

Assembly Tip:

  • I found that using the linear rails instead of the dummy rail blocks for the carriages helps with levelling the plate and it's easier to align the carriage holes with the screw holes of the plate.
  • If you do use the dummy rail blocks before you do the final tightening of the carriage screws insert the linear rails into the carriages to ensure that they're aligned with each other. 
  • Oh and did I mention Locktite, Locktite, Locktite every screw!

@mvdveer Thanks for sharing your progress and info regarding your Milo build and the link to the handwheel alternative you found. Alternative Handwheel for Milo. The issue with the Milo handwheel was that grub screws would lock properly when turning the wheel in one direction but wouldn't turn the lead screw in the opposite direction. The alternative wheel works great! It's a very nicely designed alternative.

Got all of the aluminum extrusions cut today, and assembled the Y-axis assembly. The Y lead screw came off my Creality CR6SE I decommissioned, it will need to be shortened. Next is assembling of the main table and mounting the electronic components. I'm waiting for the FMJ plates to arrive so I can assemble the Z-axis. Like @mvdveer I'm re-printing parts the X bearing block has too much slop in it, not sure what happened the Y bearing block is fine. 🤨 I also need to fabricate the wiring harnesses. I'm thinking of using 4-pin Deutsch connectors for the stepper motor for ease of disconnection. The spindle will be water-cooled, already having all of the components from the previous CNC build purchases. I have a wall-mount steel electrical enclosure which I'll use for mounting those components and the 36V power supply for the stepper motors.

Tip: Aluminium extrusion cut on a meter saw with even a cheap Chinese non-ferrous blade works well.  Make sure you have a fence to which you can attach a stop block so you duplicate cuts. Also check your saw table for flatness and your blade to the table is square.

The re-print of the X bearing block is the low profile version so I can fit the XL M6 fixture tool plate from Saunders Machine Works.

I mounted the Mellow Fly 5160 pro on din rail mounts, waiting on the M3x35mm screws and the 12V fans to complete. I'm trying to find out on Discord if I need to change or add anything in RRF to use these drivers.

Well, I'll continue with the non-conforming side (I just can't leave anything stock 😈), I printed and installed the one-piece front/back for the table and the rear feet tilt mod. A printed bumper also wraps around the VFD to protect it when tilted. The rubber feet were purchased since I didn't have any TPU. The long leg bolts were salvaged from Creality decommission. The FMJ from SendCutSend has arrived at my USA address service so I will pick those up tomorrow.

Looking good. Have also printed the tilt mod. Came across it in Steve's repository when I looked for the replacement hand wheels.

Power supply, motherboard, 5160 drivers, e-stop, on/off switch and power wago mounted. I had to scrap the din rail mount for the 5160 drivers  (not enough height) luckily I was able to mount the PCB holder directly to the extrusion with M3 T nuts.

I wired as much as I could with the table in this position, I need to mount the X/Y assembly and the Z assembly to wire the end stops and stepper motors.  I've used a single channel relay and CNC 1-3KHZ PWM 0-10V Signal to Voltage Converter Module as per the Millennium Machine manual, these parts are replaced with an expansion module in the LDO kit. When I ordered these two parts the LDO expansion module wasn't available for purchase. I see that Fabreeko now has it listed on the site.

Since I'm using a 36V power supply in a separate enclosure to power the stepper motor drivers I needed to ensure that the e-stop would cut power to the power supply 220V in that enclosure.

FMJ plates, Z plate, Z rails, and Z motor installed. I did purchase the Z motor belt but don't you hate it when you can't remember where you put it? 😅 As you can tell in the photo no spindle purchased yet, it is next on my buy list.

Got the water-cool spindle order and some other water-cool parts (reservoir/pump combo, water flow/temp meter). Drag chain for the Z axis, need to replace the rubber feet machine is too heavy for the ones I purchased. These feet have a metal support so should hold the height.

All the parts have arrived, leaving the spindle off the mill to reduce some weight.

With some leftover 2040 extrusion, I could mount the VFD, reservoir/pump and radiator. This VFD is massive compared to the LDO one supplied in the kit.

I ordered some 1/4" NPT to G1/4 adapters to change the fittings on the spindle, and a G1/4 coupler to mount the flow/temperature meter next to the pump.

12V power supply for the water-cooled components mounted. Will need a cover to protect the 220V input into the power supply.

I'd printed an organizer for the ER20 collets.

Next is building a jig so I can flip the mill to access the bottom, change out the feet, and then external wiring begins.
